This report uses data from The Economists Excess Deaths Model and the World Mortality Dataset, as well as the John Hopkin’s Coronavirus Resouce Centre. Below is an overview of the cumulative number of estimated excess deaths in each continent as of 2022-07-03
We assume that the estimated excess-mortality to date provide the best indication of the stage of the epidemic. These data are then used to calibrate our our mathematical model, which allows us to forecast the number of deaths in the next 28 days (Figure 1), assuming that the current level of interventions and mobility are maintained.
Using data on the age-dependent risk of requiring hospitalisation, oxygen and mechanical ventilation by age observed in other countries to date, we can use our model to project forwards the likely demand for healthcare over the coming four weeks. This data is currently from high-income countries and consequently likely under estimates the true burden. Full methods used, with parameter values can be found in the Methods Section.
By fitting to the time series of deaths in each country, we are able to estimate a time-varying effective reproduction number, \(R_{eff}\). \(R_{eff}\) is the the average number of secondary infections caused by a single infected person at a given time. If \(R_t\) is above 1, the rate of transmission is increasing and the number of new infections is increasing. \(R_{eff}\) is assumed to change in relation to mobility fall in proportion. When fitting out model we assume that 100% of excess mortality is COVID-19 related (please see our FAQ).
